Pelmeni

This dish is the Russian version of dumplings! There are different variations of Pelmeni in many cultures around the world, including the Georgian Khinkali, American Pot-sticker, Ukrainian Vareniki, Italian Tortellini, Chinese wonton, Jiaozi and Shui Jiao, and others. The word “pelmeni” is derived from the Finno-Ugric Komi and Mansi word “pel’nyan’”, which translates to “ear bread”. However, no one is sure exactly how the dish entered Russian cuisine. One theory suggests that perhaps it originated in northwestern China and was spread by the Mongols into Siberia and then further westward to Eastern Europe.
